The Phoenix Pioneer Band is seeking guest conductors for our 2026–2027 concert season.

This paid artistic opportunity is ideal for experienced conductors, music educators, graduate students, retired directors, and emerging professionals who would enjoy working with a dedicated community ensemble while exploring America's rich town band tradition.

Each guest conductor will lead approximately six rehearsals culminating in a public concert featuring music from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Rather than simply stepping onto the podium, guest conductors will collaborate with the Bandmaster to help develop a themed concert program that reflects the musical life of Territorial Arizona and early Phoenix.

Responsibilities

Each guest conductor will:

• Meet with band leadership to plan the concert program.

• Lead approximately six rehearsals.

• Help prepare the ensemble musically and artistically.

• Conduct the culminating public performance.

• Provide encouragement, musical insight, and leadership throughout the rehearsal process.

Who Should Apply?

We encourage applications from:

• College and university conductors

• Music education faculty

• Graduate conducting students

• Retired band directors

• Professional musicians with conducting experience

• Other qualified conductors with experience leading wind ensembles

Successful candidates should demonstrate strong musicianship, effective rehearsal techniques, and the ability to inspire a mixed-ability community ensemble.

Compensation

A stipend is provided for each conducting engagement.

Selected finalists will be invited to interview with the Phoenix Pioneer Band selection committee.
